上海民族乐团艺术总监、指挥，并于2005年至2014年间同时兼任乐团团长。亦是中央音乐学院指挥系教授。
1985年在北京指挥中央音乐学院青年民族乐团率先推出民族音乐现代作品音乐会，首开民族乐队演奏现代作品之先河，对中国民族音乐的现代发展起到了重要的推动作用。同时期亦曾指挥演奏了谭盾等许多中国著名当代作曲家的交响乐及民乐作品音乐会，并与中央民族乐团、广播民族乐团等乐团合作，演出了许多极富挑战的现代作品音乐会,推动了中国民族音乐的当代发展
自上世纪90年代以来不断应邀在海内外指挥当地乐团演奏了许多中国当代民族音乐作品，亦曾多次率团出访欧、美、亚诸多国家和地区，广泛演出中国民族音乐专场音乐会并深入介绍中国音乐文化获得广泛的赞誉。与此同时，亦有许多如双琵琶协奏曲《断桥》、古琴与乐队《听雪》、柳琴与乐队《柳依》等多类型的音乐创作，编配改编了许多民歌和民间乐曲，如《绣灯笼》、《欢乐歌》、《新编五梆子》等，均成为乐团的保留演奏曲目。
2005年应聘担任上海民族乐团团长及艺术总监以来，王甫建在乐团内部进行了一系列改革并取得令人瞩目的成效，带领这支有着悠久历史的团队步入新的辉煌。在他“以创作带动演出，以创新推动发展”的理念推动下，上海民族乐团2006年开创了自己的音乐演出季模式，策划推出了一系列大型民族音乐会，如《上海回响》、《锦绣中华》、《大音华章》，以及《丝竹雅韵》、《飞花点翠》、《土地、人与生命的赞歌》等等，受到广大音乐爱好者和社会各界的高度赞誉。
Wang Fujian/Artistic Director & Conductor
Professor Wang Fujian, the Chief of Shanghai Chinese Orchestra from 2005 to 2014, is the Artistic Director of Shanghai Chinese Orchestra and the Conducting Department of Central Conservatory of Music as well.
In 1985, Wang pioneered to conduct National Youth Orchestra of Central Conservatory of Music to present a concert of contemporary musical repertoire in Chinese traditional music format in Beijing, thus promoting the traditional music development in the new era. Wang has led the Orchestra to attend many international music festivals and academic exchange in Asia and Europe. Meanwhile, he also composed the Swinging Willow for liuqin and the orchestra, the rearranged Joyful Song and New Wu Bangzi, which are all the repertoires of SHCO.
As the director of SHCO since 2005, Wang led the Orchestra to a new era. Under his baton, the Orchestra had its first concert season in 2006, in which some big-scale Chinese music concerts such as The Reechoes of Shanghai, Earth, Human and Life, Fire Ritual received good acceptance.
