The Contemplation in Times of Conflicts

With many dazzling choices and different cultures, Chinese young composers contemplate on how to deal with those contending ideas, aesthetics and practices. The responsibility of cultivating young composers is to give them artistic and thinking independence. The key is to appreciate Chinese culture without relying on it and to revere Western culture without following it. In order to obtain the independent spirit and strength, we need to start from the knowledge framework of "both Chinese and Western” to the one of “neither Chinese nor Western” gradually. "Both Chinese and Western” refers to a poetic relationship with the knowledge to creatively understand where we come from. Then we open the door of a spiritual and cultural world to enter into a sensory and spiritual field. Meanwhile an in-depth understanding of the West, especially its religion, the fundamental philosophy, as well as the evolution of contemporary philosophical trends is needed. “Neither Chinese nor Western” is beyond the binary opposition between the East and West in order to obtain the independence of the artists, which provides a space for non-utilitarian creation (including non-utilitarian academic products), not to mention the non-political and non-commercial creation. We should cultivate an ecological environment of a common exploration for the young composers and create new voices, new notation, new playing methods, new ideas, new conceptions with the performers, theorists. At the same time, a new area on cooperation is to be explored to encourage them to work with poets, artists, architects, dancers, and scientists to find new space for music.
